e-Learning Platform Development for a University Based in the Middle East

The Client's Requirement

Flatworld Solutions was approached by one of top universities in the Middle East to develop an e-Learning platform. The University had garnered an international reputation because of the world-class quality of education it provided to its students, and they wanted the e-Learning platform to live up to the expectations of its students while providing them an integrated, high-quality solution.

The client expected us to develop an easily scalable and robust solution which could enable remote learning, and be used by students based out of multiple countries, however far. The University also expected the e-Learning platform to support distance learning courses provided online as part of the curriculum. Also, since a large number of courses (more than 400) were provided in both Arabic and English, the client wanted us to suitably integrate each course into the new e-Learning platform, while ensuring total dependability.

Project Challenges and the Flatworld Solution

The biggest challenge for our developers was to smoothly integrate all the offered courses into the new virtual e-Learning environment. Since we had handled countless other projects of similar kinds previously, scalability was never an issue, although we did face difficulty in ensuring that all the Arabic language courses were transferred over without any problem.

To do so, we assigned the project to a team of developers which interacted with the University liaison so as to understand their exact requirements. They also performed a feasibility study to ensure the existing infrastructure could easily support the e-Learning platform. Once satisfied, we deduced a solution consisting of the following -

• Integrated, Robust Software - The LMS (Learning Management System) was customized to suit the customers' requirements, and was fully developed and deployed in-house. The software was also able to easily support multiple languages, including both Arabic and English
• Multi-user Support - The LMS developed by us was robust enough to take the load of thousands of multiple users logging in at the same time
• Always-online Examinations - Each course offered through the LMS also came with daily or weekly tests as per the course requirements. This ensured that the students could not only gauge their overall progress, but also gain certifications based on certain courses. This additional capability was previously unavailable to the University, and the students welcomed it with open arms
