Case Study on ePUB and MOBI Conversion of Books

The Client

Flatworld Solutions was contacted by a European publishing company that had published several books about Libya and the Middle East. The company already had hard copies of the books, but was looking for a way to digitalize these books so that they could be accessed online and read throughout the world.

The company needed a team that could convert hard copy books into digital format - in this case - .ePUB and .MOBI. They also wanted a team that was International Digital Publishing Forum certified (IDPF Certified), with a strong quality control team in place and the ability to perform the work at a smaller budget.

The client found Flatworld Solutions via search and asked for a sample, which they approved. They selected us for the project because of our IDPF certification, and also our ability to provide typesetting services which they had also considered for the project.

The Challenges

Books were provided in hard copy format, rather than digital format, which meant that the content had to be typed into digital format before conversion to e-Publishing file types. In addition, the books were supposed to be proofread and edited first before this conversion.

As there were over 12,000 pages, so this represented a significant undertaking.

The Solution

Flatworld Solutions assigned two resources to work exclusively on this project. Rather than type each word by hand - which would increase the likelihood of error - the team used Optical Character Recognition software to convert the raw documents into editable word documents.

All three books were then proofread to ensure there were no errors, both in the book and as a result of the upload. Corrections were made when needed. Once edited, the team converted the word files to both .MOBI and .ePUB formats.

Throughout the process, the documents were checked for quality with our quality assurance team. Once completed, the team also provided typesetting services so that the clients could easily republish them if the need arose.

The Results

The project took only 20 days to finish. The team was able to achieve their accuracy level benchmark of 95%. Once completed, the client used Flatworld Solutions for future projects and recommended our services to other clients as well.
