The Client

Located in the US, the client is a leader in the global chemical industry Information management, and required an extraction service partner who was already familiar with the chemical industry domain, its scope, and the segments. The client did not want to devote extra time in monitoring and guiding their extraction partner about the scope or scale of the project.

Therefore, client preferred to outsource the project to a third-party provider because it would allow them to manage information better and free their in-house knowledge workers to concentrate on other processes.

Challenges FWS Faced

Client elected Flatworld Solutions as an extraction partner and assigned us the task of extracting information from the legacy data such as petrochemicals, chemicals, life science, pharmaceuticals, polymers, etc. FWS was requested to extract property and product information from technical abstracts. FWS was provided technical abstracts that mostly consisted of hidden data that was open to more than one interpretation. A high-level technical interpretation was necessary to extract such intricate data.

FWS' Solution

Flatworld assigned the task to a team consisting of qualified engineers, domain experts, and technical editors. The client mandated the extraction process to be implemented by matching the international quality standards.

With the right technology apparatus and competent workforce, the extraction process commenced within six weeks. Equipped state-of-the-art automation software, the extraction panel covered 145,000 abstracts in 75 days. The task was achieved a week ahead of the estimated schedule.

This task posed a certain challenge because the client furnished 7-8 decades of data in various styles, presentations, and formats. The client's design and presentation specifications were enhanced to deliver better value.

The Results

Over the course of 18 months, Flatworld analyzed over a million abstracts. With immense success from the assignment, the client sought our services in other areas such as indexing, news abstracts, and patents. Flatworld is currently extending its service in English and German languages, and the client is contemplating other languages already.
