New Research Shows Significant AI Job Opportunities Across America

Extensive research was conducted by Flatworld Solutions to compare the distribution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) job openings on Indeed.com across states. Close to 15,000 job openings were analyzed to get insights into experience-level requirements, remote work opportunities, and salary information. AI has impacted numerous industries, driving demand for skilled professionals across the United States.

Key takeaways

  • With 16 job openings per 100,000 residents, Virginia has the most job postings for AI per capita, followed by Washington and Maryland.
  • With less than 1 job opening per 100,000 residents, Mississippi has the fewest job postings for AI per capita, followed by Louisiana and West Virginia.
  • AI job openings primarily target experienced professionals at the mid or senior-level.

Regional Disparities in AI

Not all states have embraced AI to the same extent. Analysis reveals significant variations in the number of AI job openings per 100,000 residents across different states. For instance, the District of Columbia stands out as a hub for AI employment. States like Mississippi offer fewer job openings relative to their population size, indicating a disparity in AI employment opportunities. AI openings are more likely to happen in regions already invested in AI innovation and development, attracting both talent and investment.

Experience Requirements

AI job openings predominantly target experienced professionals, as evidenced by the distribution of roles across different experience levels. Mid-level positions account for almost half the job openings, followed by senior-level and entry-level roles. A small fraction of AI job openings do not require prior experience, indicating opportunities for individuals seeking entry into the field.

Almost 70% of the job openings for AI offer a salary of at least 100,000 USD. This could be explained by the experience required to work in those positions.

Remote Work Opportunities

Despite the high-tech nature of AI, remote work options remain limited. Analysis reveals that only a small fraction of AI job openings offer fully remote positions, with a slightly higher number of roles classified as hybrid, combining remote and in-person work arrangements.

As AI continues to extend to various sectors, the demand for AI talent will likely only intensify. To capitalize on this emerging field, workers may need to consider upskilling or relocating to regions with a strong AI industry.
